Dances from the past evolve into dances of the present during “Origins,” the fall dance concert presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University, Dominguez Hills on Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Origins Dance Concert posterUnder the artistic direction of the dance program coordinator, assistant professor Doris Ressl, multicultural dance styles including hip-hop and modern and those of Afro-Caribbean, Bollywood, Latin, and Middle Eastern origins will be performed by students studying dance at the university.

Along with Ressl, university faculty Amy Michele Allen, alumnus Marco Carreon (Class of ’10, B.A., theatre arts, dance option), Sarah Cashmore, and Jeff Hendrix have choreographed world dance pieces for the concert. Other choreographers are Nathan Ortiz, a senior majoring in dance, and three guest choreographers from the Los Angeles area, Rosalba Jasso, Kenneth Walker, and Aimee Wodobode.

Performing the dances are Adjoa Aboli, Amy Michele Allen, Tatiana Anderson, Aaliyah Austin, Jurizz Tarroza Barroga, alumna Sonia Bawa (Class of ’12, theatre), Chynna Carroll, Sarah Cashmore, Johanne Casio, Priscilla Cornejo, Galina Doty, Jennifer Escobar, Monique Hood, Luz-Kali Galvez, Jaslyn Garrett, Anissa Gilbert, Beliu Kefelew, Melanie Kushida, Michelle Martin, Devin McGhee, Alanna Neely-Sanchez, Nathan Ortiz, Ronisha Peters, Santiago Portillo, Libni Reyes, Jose Rodriguez, Karen Ruan, Megan J. Stewart, Sandra Villacorte, LeMaar Ware-Hodnett, Natalie Whitehead, Joi Willis, and Jacqueline Wright.

Promotional artwork for the show was designed by senior art and design major Alfonso Lomeli as an assignment for Independent Study in Art (Art 494) taught by associate professor of art and design Michele Bury.
