The California State University, Dominguez Hills Department of Theatre and Dance opens its 2013-14 season with a production of Michael Weller’s play “Loose Ends,” directed by lecturer of theatre arts and Actors’ Studio playwright member Joe D’Aquino. Performance dates are Oct. 11, 12, 18and 19, at 8 p.m., and Oct. 13 and 20, at 2 p.m. in the intimate 75-seat Edison Theatre, located in the University Theatre Complex.

“Loose Ends” delves into the relationship between Paul (Ruben Morales, senior theatre arts major) and Susan (Erika Cervantes, sophomore sociology major) as they navigate dating, love, and marriage in the exciting, turbulent, and quickly changing 1970s, and the balancing act of life: relationships, personal and professional aspirations, the evolving role of women in the work force, the roles we expect spouses and significant others to play in our lives, and the sacrifices we are willing to make for “success.”

D’Aquino described Weller’s play as “a snapshot of life in the experimental and fragmented ’70s that is still relevant for audiences because the play is ultimately about human nature and the challenges of finding wholeness through relationships— challenges that will continue to exist as long as we have those wonderful and primal human emotions: love and jealousy.”

In the tradition of the university’s theatre arts department, this production has a multi-cultural cast, including actors Amber Brice (theatre arts, sophomore), Andre Brown (theatre arts, freshman), alumna Paola Carbajal (Class of ’13, B.A., theatre arts), Andrea Esparza (sociology, junior), Samuel Shia Ewing (psychology, senior), Julian Green (communications, senior), and Mark Kerr (Class of ’07, B.A., theatre arts & advisor of the Student Services Center).

Promotional artwork for the show was designed by senior art and design major Alfonso Lomeli as an assignment for Independent Study in Art (Art 494) taught by associate professor of art and design Michele Bury.
