What: The California State University, Dominguez Hills Alumni Association presents its “Alumni Spotlight” series of notable alumni for 2012 featuring sprinter and Olympic hopeful Carmelita Jeter.
Jeter, a resident of Gardena, graduated from CSU Dominguez Hills in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. A member of the track team during her college years, Jeter was a six-time NCAA Division II All-America sprinter and a three-time runner-up at the NCAA Division II National Championships. She is the university’s most decorated track and field athlete, and the university’s first Olympic qualifier. She hopes to make the U.S. team and compete for gold in the London Summer Olympics this August.
She burst onto the national scene in 2007, taking podium finishes in national and international competitions. In 2009, she claimed the title of “fastest woman in the world” after posting a time a 10.64 in the 100m. She continued to prove that title this past year by winning the 100m finals in the USA Outdoor Championships and the IAAF World Championship in Athletics. In December, U.S.A Track and Field presented her with the 2011 Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award.
On the heels of those accomplishments and the eve of an Olympic debut, she returns to her alma mater to discuss her road to success.
